Nothing about Minami stands out. He’s the eldest son of a run of the mill, middle-class family (respectful and loving son, and a good brother), a good student (smart, but not overly brilliant), an average height, has a pleasant appearance (but not enough to turn heads twice), a responsible, dedicated captain and plays a regular tennis style with no flourish (sign play is an exception because it’s for Doubles). He is ‘jimi’ personified (at least one half of it). Minami doesn’t like it when someone points this out bluntly, but the truth is, he had learned to accept this to himself. |
 | graduation and beyond... ♦ By the time of his high school graduation, he was actually considering not going to college anymore and become a freelance photographer instead to help support his family. However, at his mother’s plea, he settled on entering a nearby college. He was juggling several part-time jobs at the time just to support his education (he refused to let his parents pay for it) as well as buying film and other photo equipments. But as the year rolled by, Minami realized he wasn’t learning anything at all. The professors are either teaching crap, or didn’t teach anything at all. Knowing he wouldn’t be able to afford other universities nearby, Minami did his best to persevere. The last straw had been in second year when he failed an exam which he had studied so hard for, on grounds that he was caught with an answer sheet. He was framed. And that was it. He quits. He spent the next few months working on various jobs, trying to earn money to try college again. But then, a missive from Hajime University arrived in the fall, claiming he had been accepted for a scholarship program. The school fee was worth two years of his father’s salary, but with the scholarship, it was like a dream come true for Minami. |
| ♥ high school life... After Yamabuki lost in the Nationals in his third year, Minami Kentarou dedicated his time studying for the entrance exams in which he passed with flying colours. High school life surprised him though. As opposed to junior high, where his unassuming nature was generally ignored, from his first day, he had been target of much bullying. Minami was patient and mature enough to comply or just walk away if possible whenever this happens; he doesn’t want to get in trouble just because of taunts, as he was just relying on a government-sponsored scholarship at the time. It was only when they threatened to hurt his younger brother, after he had stubbornly refused to break into a teacher’s office and change their failing grades for them, that he fought back. Needless to say, he lost badly. Minami enrolled in a self-defense course, and over time, he was finally able to push his tormentors back. He earned a grudging respect from his classmates for that feat, and school became much easier after that. Minami still plays tennis, but knowing that Doubles is his stronger point, he didn’t attempt to try out for the high school tennis club since Singles are prioritized on the team. Instead, he found a new love in the shape of photography, and discovered a talent for it. His love for geography came into play as he specializes on scenery photos. People are often surprised that someone like him could shoot so well; Minami takes this as a fact that he never truly lost that ‘jimi’ quality in him. He did several part time jobs just to buy his own second-hand SLR camera, which he treasures as much as his first tennis racket. |
trivia... ♠ ̽̽ Minami stopped styling his fair into spikes from the day he received his high school entrance exam report. ̽̽ An incident in one of his part time work led to an unexpected friendship between Minami and those guys who used to bully him; he became their ‘voice of conscience’ and they are now on a path of self-renewal. At least, some of them. ̽̽ He hates instant ramen with passion. It’s still a mystery why he keeps buying them when he got the chance. ̽̽ The first photo he’d taken was carefully preserved in a frame in their house; it was of a spotted Himalayan cat sleeping. ̽̽ He became a big seiyuu/actor Yazaki Hiroshi fan after watching Heroic Age. (seiyuu Yazaki Hiroshi was cast as Minami in Tenimyu. See pic. ^^) | |
